FTP is an abbreviation for a File Transfer Protocol, the protocol determining file transfers rules among computers. You must have access to the remote computer you want to work with and know a login and a corresponding password. In this case FTP allows working with the remote machine the same way as with a local one: move from one directory to another, view and change their contents.
FTP users. Technical details (ISPmanager)
FTP users are the system users and have the same UID as the associated user. It allows the user to perform operations with files in FTP home directories. Please, remember to check your FTP server settings, since after the user authorizes, chroot is specified in his home directory. For example, in proftpd you can set it up by adding the following line into proftpd.conf configuration file:

Any of the FTP users can create a public_html folder in his home directory, which will be accessible at http://site-name/~user-name (if it is allowed by your web-server).
FTP users with private home directory have their own UID, and their home directories are located in the subdirectory of the users site directory. For security reasons we recommend that you use this variant, if you create the FTP account to keep private files.
In this module You can add new FTP accounts, edit their parameters and delete them, as well as enable or disable the selected account.
Creating a new FTP account
To add a new FTP account, click the "New" icon and fill out the form.

- Name - enter the name for the FTP account you want to add. This will also be the FTP user name to get access to this FTP account
- Password - enter a password to access FTP.
- Re-enter password - retype the password to assure it has been entered correctly.
- Home directory - select a FTP account home directory:
- equal to the site admin - user directory will be used as a home one (/home/site-name/).
- private directory - enter the user's home directory such as /home/site-name/users/user-name/.
- other directory - FTP-account' home directory will coincide with the one where web-documents of the selected WWW domains reside.
- document root - select the WWW domain for this FTP account. The root directory of the selected WWW domain will be the home directory of this FTP account.
- Domain - enter the WWW domain for this FTP account.
- Directory - enter the relative path to the FTP account home directory. The filed is displayed if the "Other directory" was selected.
- Disk quota - enter the maximum amount of disk space that can be used by this FTP account. This field is displayed if "Private directory" was selected.
- Notes - use this field for additional notes.
